Inclusive development in school age

The goal is to ensure that every child with Down syndrome receives individualized educational support that takes into account their unique characteristics. This involves interdisciplinary collaboration between the school, the foundation’s therapeutic team, and the family to adapt the teaching methods. The ultimate aim is for the student to achieve educational certification with curricular adaptations that align with the grade level profile established by the Margarita Tejada Foundation for students with Down syndrome. The specific objectives are designed to promote good inclusion practices and support students with Down syndrome in educational settings:

Specific objectives

Methodology

With schools: Our team of professionals at the Margarita Tejada Foundation leads the school inclusion program. We offer training, workshops, and awareness-raising activities to schools. We also conduct bi-weekly or monthly visits to provide support and monitoring for each student with Down syndrome enrolled in the program. We work together on the student’s individualized education plan and assign a specific professional for follow-up.

With students: Students with Down syndrome attend the foundation on certain days of the week, depending on their age, to receive specialized therapeutic support. This includes speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology, dental and medical services, among others. They also receive academic support based on the needs identified during visits to their schools, and we encourage interaction with their peers with Down syndrome. Additionally, they participate in our age-appropriate socio-emotional, affective, and sexual development program.
