The Margarita Tejada Foundation for Down Syndrome is a non-profit institution founded by a group of ten mothers of children with Down syndrome, along with three individuals who contributed to the cause. Their goal was to provide others with this condition the opportunity for high-quality holistic development through health and educational programs. These include specialized therapies and special education tailored to individual needs, aimed at offering a better quality of life and achieving independence and functionality.
In 1999, the first stone was laid for the infrastructure in Zone 16, which currently spans over 6,500 square meters of purpose-built facilities. Additionally, we have an annex in Antigua Sacatepéquez to provide programs to the surrounding departments.
With the spirit of making social, cultural, sporting, academic, and professional equity and inclusion a reality for people with Down syndrome, the Margarita Tejada Foundation developed the (Paths of Opportunity and Progress) project. This longitudinal initiative offers comprehensive development programs covering health and education from the first month of life through adulthood, significantly improving quality of life.
The programs also provide professional support and guidance to families, making them an active part of the holistic development of individuals with this condition, while also raising social awareness to foster opportunities for true inclusion.
Driven by the mission to make social, educational, and workplace equity and inclusion a reality for people with Down syndrome, the Margarita Tejada Foundation, through its comprehensive development programs, enables individuals with this condition to benefit from the “Routes of Opportunity and Progress Project.” This project has been expanded since 2008 and provides support from 15 days after birth through adulthood.
